A Contemporary Home with Classic Influence
Situated near the heart of the city, this British colonial abode sets the tone for a calming retreat, thoughtfully balancing elegance with everyday comfort. Upon entry, a round dining table encourages openness and conversation. A statement mirror, framed with wainscoting details, adds a sophisticated touch that anchors the space. The living area is kept clean and understated, offering a serene environment for rest and relaxation.
In the galley kitchen, patterned floor tiles introduce a layer of visual contrast, grounding the space with subtle character. To honour the essence of classic colonial design, detailing extends beyond the shaker cabinetry — an elegant cornice runs across the top of the kitchen carpentry for a refined, bespoke finish. Understated brass handles complete the look with a touch of vintage warmth. By the windows, a small table creates a quiet corner within the service yard — a simple spot for moments of rest and relaxation.
The bathrooms continue this thoughtful layering of textures. In the bathroom, a horizontal brick-lay feature wall adds depth and architectural interest, contrasting the master bathroom where accent green tiles introduce a soothing and restorative ambience. This bright and airy dwelling is a nuanced modern interpretation, where timeless detailing, natural light and spatial openness are brought together with quiet intention.
Interior Designer’s Thoughts
Guided by the homeowners’ appreciation for Singapore’s iconic black-and-white colonial bungalows, the design centres on blending timeless elegance with tropical comfort. Emphasis was placed on natural light, refined architectural detailing, and a restrained monochromatic palette. Existing built-ins were removed in favour of loose furniture, allowing greater flexibility for personalisation and future adaptation.
A key challenge lay in the unit’s corridor-facing orientation, which required a careful balance between privacy, light, and ventilation. Instead of limiting solutions, a layered approach was introduced: full clear glass windows maximise daylight, complemented by blinds and sheer curtains to provide adjustable privacy. At the entrance, a custom metal gate with angled grilles subtly obscures direct views into the home. Together, these elements allow the space to remain bright, airy, and well-ventilated — resolving the privacy concerns while preserving the home’s sense of openness and comfort.
